Get Gear at a Great Price

The Clymb

With each successive mile I realize the importance of utilizing quality the gear. The problem is that quality costs (and sometimes it costs a lot). A few weeks ago a friend let me know about a new website that offers quality outdoor gear at highly discounted prices. Like Woot they offer products at a discounted price for a certain length of time. The deal ends when time expires or when items have sold out. The nice thing about The Clymb is that they deal exclusively in outdoor goods and products. Recently, they've carried running shoes, clothing, hydration packs, and things of that sort. I neither own shares in the company nor have any … [Read more...]

It’s a scorcher out there…

weather alert

This afternoon, as I was putting the finishing touches on my message for Sunday, I received "severe weather" announcements from The Weather Channel on both my DROID and iPad. The announcement: It's a scorched out there; lock your pets and elderly in an air-conditioned room; and cease and desist from any strenuous physical activity. The announcement was neither new or surprising. I received similar notifications on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Wednesday I ran. Yesterday I did not. Given that I was up much of the night working on a paper and working on the ceremony for my brother's upcoming wedding, every fiber of my being rejoiced … [Read more...]

Hydration, Body Glide, and Bathrooms: Some Advice Born Of Pain and Embarrassment

adviceshop

Running was something that I stumbled back into. After many fits and starts, I settled into a routine and began to rack up the miles. At first my runs were short (three to four miles and no more than an hour). In time, however, those three and four miles jaunts weren't enough. So, I upped both the distance and duration of the run. Running alone and without the camaraderie of a running community I had to learn some lessons the hard way. In hindsight, many of the lessons that were learned could have been avoided had I either taken the time to think more fully about what I was doing or by simply setting aside my pride (and embarrassment of … [Read more...]

Recipe for Homemade Sports Drink

Like many, I use sports drinks to hydrate before runs and to rehydrate during and after runs. A few years ago, I started buying the powdered version of my favorite sports drink so that I could make it when I wanted and save money. Recently, desiring to know what is in the stuff that I consume, I have been doing research and as a result have concocted my own powered sports drink mix that can be added to water for hydration purposes. The concoction is as follows: 1 cup of sugar. 1 tsp of sea salt. 1 package of unsweetened drink mix (I use the Sam's Club version of Crystal Light). Mix the ingredients together. Keep in a … [Read more...]

Recipe for Homemade Energy Gels

Who doesn’t like a boost of energy when out for a long run? Like many others, from time to time I’ll employ energy gels to get said boost. The problem, however, is that they are rather expensive considering what you get for the price. With a little research and some innovation, I was able to come up with a cheap solution that can be flavored to suit one’s taste. The recipe is as follows: 7 1/3 tablespoons honey. 3/4 teaspoons molasses. 1/10 teaspoons sea salt. Mix the ingredients together and then put them into a container that you can carry with you on your run. I use the Ultimate Direction Gel Flask Clip-on available at … [Read more...]

Recipe for Homemade Lara(like) Bars

When I run longer distances, I like to carry a snack or two that is both nutritious and tasty. Having received a free Larabar while shopping at a local store, I found that I enjoyed not only the taste of the product and the fact that it would provide needed nutrients, but that it was natural. However, I’m frugal. (My wife and others would suggest that I’m “cheap”). So while very much enjoying the Larabar, I don’t care much for the price. After visiting the company’s website and scouring the internet for recipes, I was able to settle upon a concoction that works relatively well for making your own “Very Cherry” Lara(like) … [Read more...]

Running Solo But Not Alone

R0011172

As an introvert, one of the things that I have come to really love about running is the quiet and solitude that it affords me. Yesterday, for example, I grabbed my hydration pack and set out for a run. Where I would go, I wasn’t really sure. Nor did I know how long I would be gone. All that I knew was that I wanted to explore an old logging road that I had come across while driving the other evening. Having the freedom to set my own pace, travel whatever distance my body will allow, and run for as long as is comfortable are the result of almost two years worth of discipline. But it wasn’t always so. Two years ago, when I laced up my … [Read more...]

Humiliating Beginnings

Running gear, like all things, ages. I know this because for years I had running shorts, dry-fit shirts, and a variety of running shoes in my closet. In August of 2009, a year into my seminary journey, I decided to dig my sneakers out of the closet, lace them up, and pound the pavement. No such luck. After gathering dust for four years, the soles of my running shoes were brittle and would break apart in chunks. Determined to run and committed to getting back into shape for my health and for the sake of both my family (we had one child at this point) and my ministry, I went to a big box store and purchased the cheapest pair of running … [Read more...]
