What ya got cookin'? How's about cookin' somethin' up with me? Namely, breakfast! The following is a snippet of a conversation my sister, Anne, and I had one morning several months ago. +++ Me: I'm hungry already. I had breakfast like 2 hours ago. This is the flipping story of my life. There's an article in the Onion today that's titled, "Woman Upset At Herself For Feeling Hungry." Funny. Anne: I know, I'm hungry every two hours at least. Me: But my breakfast was honkin'! So annoying. [Note: "Honkin'," a word most often heard in the southern United States, means "huge," "surpassing normal expectations." Synonym: big ol'.] Anne: … [Read more...]
Stress Eating

Last year, I had an unexpected realization. I am a stress eater. Meaning: when I am stressed out, I reach for some food. Before this, I had not considered that my eating was tied to my emotions. It would be okay to be a stress eater if I craved crunchy carrots or a leafy green salad. Neither of those things sound good to me when I'm stressed out. When I'm stressed out, I want the unhealthy trinity--Sugar, Fat, Salt. I realized that when I was having a stressful day or very busy or feeling upset, I craved sweets and junk food and pizza and burgers. Sticking to my diet is so hard on days like that. Plus, I also now know that I'm … [Read more...]
A Week of Food on #RunRevRun

#RunRevRun has been around for almost two months now, and I hope you've been enjoying the many stories, tips and advice that has been shared so far here on the site. This week, we're going to be stepping away from running-specific posts, and delving into the world of food. Last year when I started training for a half marathon, I remember thinking to myself, "This is going to be an easy way to drop some pounds!" When I started training, I weighed 170lbs. Three months later, on the day that I ran the race, I weighed 170lbs. I was pretty confused. However, if you watched my eating habits during those 3 months, it would have been pretty easy … [Read more...]
Plan Ahead

It’s Tuesday and my alarm goes off at 6:00 a.m. I have to get up, get some coffee, get myself ready, make sure my husband and son get up and ready and get to one of our middle schools by 7:20 for the week’s ACT (All Christians Together) Club. When I leave ACT club, I technically have an hour before I need to be in my office at the church. I will work until about 10:45 and then head to meet youth ministers from other churches for prayer at the park on the Ohio River. We will talk and pray for awhile and then I’ll head back to the church and eat lunch. If I don’t have a meeting that evening, my work day ends around 3:00. I will run any … [Read more...]
Committed

I recently came across a journal entry from May 5, 2008. I’ve heard that writing down your goals greatly increases your chances of completing them. So here’s to even more resolve, now that I’m writing and I’ve told others… Last Wednesday, I joined a fitness studio. So far, I’ve taken 2 BODYPUMP classes, 2 BODYFLOW, and 1 Nia. And I’m feeling great. More energy; better sleep, and less hungry. Not to mention the sense of accomplishment I feel at the end of each class. (Like Nia, when I didn’t think I would make it through the 45-minute class, much less another 45 minutes of BODYFLOW that followed!) So I’m committing … [Read more...]
New Beginnings

I know that God has a sense of humor. Three years ago, I would have been the least likely candidate to blog about fitness on a consistent regular basis. But, this is what I’m signing up to do! After my 30th birthday, I knew I needed to make some changes. I had blood work done as part of a physical with a new physician and she called me, concerned about some of my numbers. “Nothing to freak out about right now,” she said, “but we’ll need to keep an eye on these things.” Blood sugar. Cholesterol. Triglicerides. The number on the scale? Too high. “Here are some things you can do...” she began. The list … [Read more...]
